MEDIA NOTES FOR OPERATION SHATTERED GAZURMAH/OPERATION SHRIEKING FIRE (ONGOING) (EN)

To: NATOPressOffice_all

As you all are undoubtedly aware, the past 24 hours have been some of the most explosive in NATO’s history. Here is the NATO Press Office and all member nations’ official response to the media inquiries:

“At 3 in the morning local time on the night of 16 June, the submarine USS Casper Falls was attacked while traveling off the coast of Lagos in the Gulf of Guinea, in international waters, by a number of unmanned assailants. NATO, following the provisions within Article 5, responded in kind with attacks on positions in and around Lagos and Lekki. NATO and CAM quickly worked to come to a high-level agreement and end peer hostilities. However, the situation in Lagos remains unsettled. Both NATO and CAM are now cooperating to restore order in the city.”

Due to the frenetic, surprising nature of the flash conflict, CENTCOM has released some important talking points to keep in mind when engaging in interviews with media outlets.

  • DO SAY:
    • A US Columbia-class submarine underway to NATO training exercises off the coast of South Africa, the USS Casper Falls, was engaged by an unknown number of ECHT-366 unmanned maritime vehicles, or “submarine drones”. The damage the Casper Falls sustained in the first attack was enough to sink the vessel.
    • Mention the ECHT-366 is a variation of the United States-Israeli ‘Harbor Hawk’, designed to protect shipping vessels, captured and reverse engineered during a joint CAM ISR sortie in the Suez Canal.
  • DO NOT SAY:
    • Whether the Casper Falls wandered into the ECHT-366’s loitering kill radius or not is unknown and is still a point of contention.
    • Whether the Casper Falls was engaged by the ECHT-366 with human operational oversight or as a reaction to the violation of the ECHT-366’s patrol radius. This is still up for debate—Lagos Strategic Security Special Police Command insists that the ECHT-366 requires an operator to issue the kill command, and is undergoing an investigation to find those responsible. THEIA logs insist the ECHT-366s operated on their own.
  • DO SAY:
    • Following the engagement of the Casper Falls, the decision was made to treat the sinking as the first prong in a larger attack on NATO assets in the hostile geopolitical climate. NATO forces responded quickly per Article 5 to provide military aid, and a combined German-Spanish spearhead naval battlegroup, also en route to training exercises off the Cape of Good Hope, was authorized to begin attacks on CAM littoral defense positions in the Lagos-Lekki region in a limited, reactive shelling campaign.
    • When pressed for further details, reply that details are forthcoming once their “strategic importance” has diminished enough for them to become public knowledge. “There is a war on”.
  • DO NOT SAY:
    • ISR emerging from the sinking of the Casper Falls and the events immediately following are spotty at best, and new details are emerging constantly as THEIA and on-the-ground investigations continue, as well as CAM military forces prepare their own report.
    • CENTCOM’s authorization of full littoral shelling has only been ambiguously logged within the battle record—a full investigation is pending as to the exact timeline of events.
  • DO SAY:
    • This was not a war, but rather a defensive action. Please refer to all hostilities as “defense actions in Lagos and its surrounding waters”.
  • DO NOT SAY:
    • “8 Hours’ War” or any other admission of ‘war’, or any capitulation to sensationalist naming practices.
  • DO SAY:
    • NATO & CAM forces are now working together both directly and with local partners to stifle the growing unrest in Lagos which threaten the sovereignty of the Lagos municipal, Lagos State, and Nigerian governmental structures.
    • Stress that this is a collaborative effort with minimal NATO combat personnel presence on the ground, and then solely to protect NATO assets in the region as the situation further deteriorates.
  • DO NOT SAY:
    • NATO forces are actively engaged and working as partners within Lagos and Lekki to quell riots and insurrectionary activity instigated either by local Sankarist guerrillas or Islamic radical groups, under the combined lead of CENTCOM and CAM jurisdiction.
