3 FISHERMEN DEAD AFTER ATTEMPTING TO CAPTURE UNMANNED MARINE DRONE
The Nigerian Ports Authority released a statement reporting that three fishermen have died this morning after attempting to capture a Mutuality harbor-channel drone.
The drones, of which the NPA and Strat-Sec report to be over 10,000 deployed at any given time in off the coast of Lagos and Lekki, are a popular target for fishermen as well as specialized drone hunters, who generally either incapacitate the drones and attempt to ransom them to the authorities or simply scrap them for parts.
“Last year alone, 117 people died tampering with our harbor-channel drones,” NPA spokesperson Idris Sakonke told Punch. “We would urge all citizens who have business in the harbor and shipping channels to familiarize themselves with the safety protocols document Marine Drones: Living with Our Underwater Friends, available at any Kanect kiosk or online at the Nigerian Ports Authority portal”.
